Today I’m sharing a lifestyle cake smash session in Washington, D.C.! I get inquiries about cake smash photos from time to time, and I love when families decide to celebrate their baby's first birthday at home. There's something really special about documenting your little one in a space where they already feel comfortable, especially during a stage when they're busy exploring everything around them.
I first photographed this little guy when he was a tiny newborn, so I was SO excited to see the family again and see how much he'd grown! The first year goes by quickly, and getting to photograph families through these different seasons is one of my favorite parts of what I do.
A Relaxed In-Home First Birthday Photo Session
We started with some portraits of this curious little guy exploring his home. I couldn't resist those adorable diaper shots before getting him dressed, either! I wanted to capture the busyness of being a toddler at this age, from climbing and exploring to playing with his toys and spending time with mom and dad.
One of the things I love about lifestyle family photography is that we don't have to spend the entire session trying to get a little one to sit still and smile at the camera. I'll guide you through the session and help create opportunities for connection, but there's also plenty of room for your child to move around, play, and be themselves.

Cake Smash Photos Don't Have to Be Elaborate!
This session was especially fun because the parents came up with the idea for the cake smash, and they even cooked him an amazing steak for breakfast! He was such a good eater, and I loved documenting this sweet little celebration.
You don't need a million decorations or an elaborate setup to celebrate your baby's first birthday with photos. For this family, we kept things simple at home, focused on their little guy and the family together, and added a few cute decorations to his high chair for the cake smash.
I love this approach because we get more than photos of a baby eating cake. We also get portraits of your little one at this age, playful moments around the house, and photos with the people who are part of their everyday life. It's a fun way to celebrate turning one while documenting all those little details you'll want to remember as they grow.
