Today I’m writing all about why an in home session can be perfect for your family, featuring this mama and her girls!

There’s something to be said about capturing everyday moments where they naturally unfold. At home! A few months ago I had the joy of photographing a mama and her two daughters during a playful family session in Bethesda, Maryland.

What made this session so special wasn’t the perfect outfits or a styled setting, rather it was the genuine connection between the sisters and mama. The sisters played together, got the giggles, and even took turns saying that it was their turn to take pictures with their mom!

In-home family photography allows your family members to remain comfortable in such a familiar space! Kids have their toys, their room, and even options to change outfits (which I see a lot at this age!) I think in home sessions really help the kids let their true personalities show. That’s exactly what I aim to capture!

No two families are the same so I don’t believe in copying and pasting the exact same poses and prompts. Yes, I’ll guide connection and I’ll prompt some connection when needed, but the beauty of lifestyle family photography is that it is a little more relaxed and includes your family’s unique dynamics and personalities. Often families have really good ideas and locations for sessions and this helps to create such a full gallery!

This family session took place in Bethesda Maryland and the family didn’t have to worry about packing up all of their things and rushing out the door, they stayed right at home!

Whether that means silly dancing, wearing the same costume for three days, twirling, seeing how high you can stack your magnatile tower, or sitting in mom or dad’s lap to read a book. These are all activities that we can include during your in home family photo session, helping your family session to feel natural.

Lifestyle family photography gives space for kids to be themselves, rather than needing them to “perform”. I promise if you let them be themselves (with a little bit of guidance or redirection when needed), you’ll end up with a full gallery of meaningful images.

This family photography session took place in Rehoboth Beach with a young child. Some of the ways we got lifestyle images of the family was having a loose plan but knowing how we wanted to use the light and the space.

When photographing young children it’s important to not have super high expectations. This little one made my job so easy! I encouraged the family to bring a preferred lovey to the session that would help to document this age. I LOVED that he had the lovey in several images.

This family was very playful so naturally we had a lot of movement. We got some special images with the little guy and each of his parents.

As a Rehoboth beach photographer I don’t want your family photo session to feel super posed or stiff.

I encourage movement, a lot of movement.

We walk, play, look for things in the water, and feel the sand on our toes.

It’s important to not stay in one place for too long, so we varied up the poses with standing, walking, playing, and sitting.

A family photo session at the beach should be timed early morning or early evening with soft but illuminating light to help your family look their best.
